This 97,000 word novel is set in Amsterdam during a solar eclipse at the close of the twentieth century.

The main characters are Melly, a middle-aged man, whose outlook on the world is shaped by the amount of cannabis he consumes, and Talish, a young prostitute whose movements are determined by her search for fixes of crack-cocaine.  Their affair is both torrid and tormented, much like the lives that each wishes to escape.

There are many references to drug use, there are graphic sexual references; A Field in Arlon is definitely adult material but it does not have content of this nature in order to be controversial; these are essential elements to the story and to the setting.  One might expect this in Amsterdam.
